So, the polls are in and it’s a lock: 2020 is a wreck. There are so many uncertainties, stressors, and just awful things happening in our world. I would say negativity is at an all-time high (and it is) but some of it is just realism at this point.
That said, what do you do if there are things in life, even in 2020, that are making you genuinely happy? And I don’t just mean the little, simple pleasures, although hang on to those wherever you can find them.
No, I mean deep-down, life-altering, amazing happiness. Even now. Even in the face of the world that we’re in.
I suppose it goes back to something my therapist said, which is that life goes on, even in this time. It does. And for me, the things that 2020 has brought have been monumental, from a new home to a new job to a new relationship to a new sense of self.
And, dear readers, I am not just a little bit happy about these things. I am over the moon. I haven’t felt this fulfilled and whole and complete and like myself in a long time.
Now, I’m a serious person and I understand all the things going on in the world that require real attention and effort. There are days when the weight of these issues certainly is more than the buoyancy I feel from the aforementioned things in my own life. But there are days when I’m just happy. Really, deep down happy. I try to moderate it because I know the times we’re living in.
It occurred to me that the distinction is allowing yourself to feel the happiness, without guilt or judgment, so long as you’re not conflating it with a sense that all is right with the world. There is work to be done in the world: real, serious work. But you can still be happy while doing it. You can still be happy even in this time.
