This weekend, we found ourselves collectively shocked and saddened by the death of Chadwick Boseman at age 43 from colon cancer. It's not just his age, but the fact that he portrayed characters with such life and vitality, even when he himself was sick. His roles were iconic, especially for the black community. His loss will have a tremendous impact. And I can't help but think that in his death, there is a lesson as well. Colon cancer is one of the deadliest cancers and often goes undetected until the later stages. My grandmother died of colon cancer at the age of 55, when I was 8 months … [Read more...] about Colon Cancer

Photo Shoots
If you ever want me to feel like an old lady (probably sound like one too), get me started on the topic of how social media platforms have evolved in the nearly 10 years that I've been blogging. Picture me on a porch, in a rocker: "Back when I started blogging, Instagram didn't even exist!" At any rate, Instagram in particular has evolved from being, well, instant to being a place for much more curated content (sometimes it's still instant, though, à la my post from last night.) This evolution has led to a lot more photo shoots in the name of content. And when I started doing these shoots, … [Read more...] about Photo Shoots
CookinGenie
As I'm adjusting to being back in an office five days a week, one thing I notice has been seriously reduced is my motivation to cook when I get home from work. And as much as I love supporting local restaurants doing take-out, sometimes you just want a home cooked meal. Well, enter CookinGenie, which allows you to enjoy a delicious meal cooked in your home without the work of actually, well, cooking. CookinGenie's founder Sabah and I "met" on one of my girl Annie's Signature Sweets virtual baking class. I love seeing local small business owners support each other, so when Sabah reached out … [Read more...] about CookinGenie
Hocking Hills
Awhile back, one of my blogger buddies Kate described herself as "aggressively indoorsy" and I tell you, I felt seen. I am not a nature-y person, but in this strange time we're living in, nature has become not only a place where you can see people somewhat safely, but also one of the few vacation options we have. Jeff and I were looking for a place to get away just the two of us and we landed on Hocking Hills. We rented a cabin from Cedar Grove Lodging and Events. The location was perfect: on the main road through Hocking Hills and less than 5 minutes from Old Man's Cave. The cabin … [Read more...] about Hocking Hills
A Divorce Allegory
This was the post I was never going to write. But sometimes there are things that you just need to say. Because I've found so much strength and solace in other people sharing their truth. And maybe sharing this can be that for someone else. In some instances, divorce happens because of a cataclysmic event. It wasn't that way for me. The best way I can explain it is with this allegory: Last week, I brought a box of books from law school into my office. When I took the box out of my car, it felt completely manageable to carry. As I got toward my building, I was feeling less confident. As I … [Read more...] about A Divorce Allegory
Challah at Meg
There's nothing better than shining a light on a new local business that is making yummy creations. I not only love her delicious challah, but I love her grassroots story and how she found help and inspiration from others on social media. What gave you the idea to start Challah at Meg? Challah at Meg came about after a month of making challah. I am a self-taught challah baker! I had been taking orders and I started following other challah bakers around the world on Instagram and felt that I wanted to make a name for myself and I started toying with the idea of a business. … [Read more...] about Challah at Meg
