So, this weekend was a big one in my world…my two Jeff(rey)s met each other! I’ve been basically living a dual life of being a mom half the week and a girlfriend on the days when I don’t have Jeffrey.
And while the meeting was not at all due to my exhaustion with that dual life, it sure is nice to start to bring these two anchors of my worlds together.
We met up at Topgolf, which is somewhere Jeffrey has been asking to go since his golf lessons with the First Tee of Cleveland. Much like any first date, it’s good to have an activity to keep everyone entertained.
Jeffrey knew that Jeff existed, but only as “Star Wars Buddy,” due to their mutual love of all things Star Wars related. The night before Topgolf, Jeff FaceTimed Jeffrey to ask if he’d like to go golfing with him. Especially in a time of having to wear masks, it was nice for them to connect face-to-face first.
We had a blast at Topgolf, even though Jeffrey tells me I need to go back to practice more.
We had lunch at one of Jeffrey’s favorites: Yours Truly. To see Jeffrey and Jeff connect over Star Wars and milkshakes and teasing me was just a delight.
The best advice I can offer with something like this is that you know your child (and your relationship.) We chose a time when we were confident that Jeffrey would be OK with meeting someone new. We also are easing in, with meetings in neutral places that are well spaced out in time. And we’re easing in to the concept that Jeff and I are dating…right now, Jeffrey knows he’s someone who is important to me and a new friend for him.
In all of the changes in my life, I’ve never been unaware of the fact that Jeffrey is going through a lot of changes too. Making those changes comfortable for him, being there for him through them, and making the best choices I can for his happiness are front and center for me.
It sure is nice to see my worlds come together though. And so happily, too…
